I don’t want to alarm anybody, but I think Archie is having an inappropriate affair with his teacher Miss Grundy.
Yes, I am talking about Archie Andrews from the comics. And while I like to remember myself as a ten-year-old reading The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman and other silver age classics, I have to admit that more often than not on those long car rides in the back seat I would reach for an Archie.
So let’s just say I knew the difference between Miss Grundy and Mr. Weatherbee.
Since making his debut in 1941, Archie has evolved. In the 1960’s, the gang got groovier. The plotlines would sometimes veer into serious territory in the ‘70’s with Archie dabbling in sci-fi and horror. Archie’s first gay character debuted in 2010.
In 2013 “Afterlife With Archie” was published, depicting Archie and his pals dealing with a Zombie apocalypse.
Many years before that though, I remember arriving at a cabin my parents had rented and finding a big box of Archie comics…only to discover to my disdain that they were Christian Archie comics. These comics, which were sold in the 70’s and 80’s, used Archie and his friends to tell stories with strong Christian themes and morals, sometimes incorporating Bible scripture. I know right.
I’ve been thinking about Archie this week after my teenage daughter and I sat down to watch a few episodes of “Riverdale” now on Netflix (here’s the trailer). My daughter was curious mainly because the show is currently being filmed in the halls of her Vancouver high school and stars one of the identical twin brothers from the TV show “Suite Life with Zack and Cody,” Cole Sprouse (he plays Jughead).
All of your other favorites are there too…Betty, Veronica, Reggie, and even a closeted Moose (he’s having a secret affair with Betty’s gay best friend Kevin). And that brings us to Archie’s illegal relationship with Miss Grundy. I told you Archie has evolved.
