Scammers copy VPD’s number to steal money over the phone

A warning from Vancouver Police – scammers have spoofed their phone number and are pretending to collect money.

Staff Sergeant Randy Fincham warns in a statement that these “con-artists” have manipulated their phones to display the VPD’s non-emergency number, 604-717-3321, when they call and pretend to demand unpaid tax money on behalf of the Canada Revenue Agency.

Fincham says the number is only used for reporting non-emergency police situations, and that the CRA doesn’t ask for payment over the phone or ask for personal information.

He’s asking anyone who thinks they may be a victim of fraud to contact Vancouver Police.
