City of Vancouver opening warming centres

Well the sun may be out, it is far from a warm day in Vancouver. Looking at the forecast the high for today is plus 4, but tonight it will be minus 1.

In response to the call for cold weather, the City of Vancouver is opening warming centres as part of the city’s Warming Centre Program.

Warming centres will be open at the following locations:

  • Britannia Community Centre – 1739 Venables Street (Hours: 9pm to 8:30am)
  • Carnegie Community Centre – 401 Main Street (Hours: 11:15pm to 7am)
  • West End Community Centre – 870 Denman Street (Hours: 11pm to 7am)

Those looking for shelter space are being told they can call 2-1-1 to check the availability and people are being reminded that no reservation is required.

Warming centres are activated when the temperature reaches  -5; however, in the press release, the city has not revealed if warming centres will be open for the full week.

The forecast is calling for possible snow tomorrow night and a low of plus 1. Wednesday is expected to be even colder, with a low of minus 4 overnight.

Roundhouse Radio will keep you updated if the city plans to open warming centres throughout the week as Vancouver prepares for a cold February week.
